Two Valencia students compete at national Chemistry Olympiad competition

Congratulations to coach Brent Shenton and Valencia High School students Benjamin Nguyen and June Ho Park who advanced and competed in the national round of Chemistry Olympiad. They joined 11 other students from Troy, University, Beckman, Brea Olinda, El Toro, Edison, Irvine and Northwood high schools to represent Orange County. Approximately 1,000 students across the nation make it to this level.

Ben Nguyen, a junior at VHS, finished among the top 20 students in this round of Chemistry Olympiad! He now is making arrangements to attend the national study camp where four students will be chosen to represent the United States against approximately 75 other countries in an international competition. Only two students in Valencia history have made it to this level in the past. Congrats Ben!

A competition for first-year chemistry students was also recently held. Fifty county schools sent their top eight students to California State University, Fullerton, to compete. Team scores are computed based on the top five scores for each school. Valencia finished second in Orange County!

The team consisted of Aayush Somani, Chanson Zhao, Ashwin Bhupathy, Junil Kim and William Chung. Aayush received the top score for Valencia. This team will also be recognized with the Chemistry Olympiad team at the American Chemical Society (ACS) Awards Dinner at University of California, Irvine, on May 24.
