Students in Mrs. Paola Dell’Olio Hellwig’s class at Travis Ranch School designed and built a prototype of a prosthetic lower leg as a culminating group project to the joints and levers in the human body course of study.
This was another example of integrating engineering into the seventh grade science curriculum in an attempt to gradually roll-out Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) into current standards.
A few different groups actually created functional prototypes. A parent of one of the students graciously loaned a real prosthetic leg to observe and study as part of this project. It’s considered a basic leg, and it’s worth about $10,000.
