Learning at Golden extends beyond books

Golden Elementary School is a place where students (and their families) learn in many ways, often beyond what is taught in textbooks. Teachers, staff and parents plan, organize and support various educational experiences.

All areas of curriculum are pushed beyond the boundaries of books. Students can be found “Walking Through” ancient civilizations, California history and the American Revolution. They learn to lead and mentor other students through the school’s Peer Assistance and Leadership (PAL) program. Boys and girls hone their writing skills in a NaNoWriMo program where they produce a novel – Golden students collectively wrote over 100,000 words during the month of November alone! Arts education is integrated with musical revues such as, Charlotte’s Web, the Musical. Math and art are combined with STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) robotics projects in fourth grade, and Modigliani painting projects in fifth grade. Fifth graders in the gifted and talented education (GATE) program build roller coasters that marbles fly through to learn the laws of physics. Anyone can learn to code during the “Hour of Code.” And families come to school at night to experience hands-on science (gaze through telescopes at constellations, dissect pig hearts, make polymers) during Family Science Night.

Bringing learning into the third dimension and educating all aspects of a child are what this school does best. That’s what makes Golden students “SHINE” (Safe, Here and ready, Inclusive, Nurturing and Exceptional)!
