OCMAA 2023 Arts Award Ceremony honors several PYLUSD educators and highlights elementary school band

OCMAA awards ceremony.

On Wednesday, February 8, 2023, Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District music educators and district leaders attended the Orange County Music and Arts Administrators (OCMAA) 2023 Arts Award Ceremony. The event took place in the Henry and Renee Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa and was sponsored by the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, Orange County Department of Education, and OCMAA.

Proudly featured during the event was Golden Elementary School’s 6th-grade band, under the direction of teacher Mr. Ray Llewellyn. Principal Kristin McDonald was also there to support her students.

The event also honored Orange County’s finest music educators including many from PYLUSD. Recognized were Matt LaBelle from Yorba Linda Middle School, Brad Davis from Esperanza High School, Jennifer Garcia from Valadez Middle School Academy, Mark Myers from Esperanza High School, Sharon Edmondson, elementary vocal teacher, Mary Struckmeier, elementary instrumental music teacher, and Orange County Elementary Instrumental Educator of the Year, Jeff Evans.

Phil Mortensen, PYLUSD Performing Arts Coordinator, mentioned, “The event put a bright light on the amazing teaching we enjoy every single day. Watching the wonderful performance by the Golden Elementary School Band was a shining example of our commitment to quality music education!”
