UCI Eye Mobile Van provides PYLUSD preschoolers with free pairs of glasses

The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District has a partnership with the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Eye Mobile Van. School nurse Whitney Norrbom teamed up with the university at the beginning of the school year to provide 23 preschoolers with a free pair of glasses!

The UCI Eye Mobile Van is a program that offers free glasses to students in need. It is a two-step process that begins with an initial screening using a hand-held digital auto-refractor. If the screening suggests a referral, the child will be given a comprehensive eye exam by the Eye Mobile team on a different day. If the exam performed by an Optometrist indicates the child would benefit from glasses, the child is able to pick out their own frame and the glasses will be delivered to the school shortly after.

Preschoolers at Linda Vista, Topaz, Ruby Drive, Melrose, and Rio Vista elementary schools received glasses this year, including Hayden (pictured above).

When asked about the program, Hayden’s mom Jackie shared: “We are so grateful for the UCI Eye Mobile Program because it made it so simple to get our daughter’s eye checked and get her the perfect pair of glasses at such a young age. We won’t forget how big Hayden’s smile was the day she got her glasses!”

PYLUSD is grateful to UCI for the ongoing partnership and support of students!
