Leading up to this event, AppJam+, an initiative of Dreams for Schools, paired middle school students with college mentors from Computer Science and Engineering fields to expose them to mobile app development and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) career pathways. Mentors work with the students over 8-10 weeks for 2-hour programming sessions twice a week. Forming teams of 4-5 students, they utilize AppInventor to create a STEM related mobile app designated for a K-12 audience.
This Spring, Dreams for Schools partnered with PYLUSD to bring the AppJam+ program to all the six middle schools in the District — Bernardo Yorba Middle School, Kraemer Middle School, Travis Ranch School, Tuffree Middle School, Valadez Middle School Academy, and Yorba Linda Middle School. For the first time, Valencia High School also signed up to participate in the voluntary after-school program.
This hands-on, creative challenge to build a working piece of software on a deadline gets school students excited about and exposed to STEM fields. For more information about AppJam+, please visit www.appjamplus.com.
