Two Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) students are set to compete on the Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship premiering on Monday, December 27, at 8 p.m. This includes 5th grader at Golden Elementary School, Summar Haque, and 4th grader at Travis Ranch School, Ellora Martinez!
About Summer
Summer Haque, a 5th grader at Golden Elementary School, has been in love with baking since before she could reach the counter. Likening baking to one big science experiment, she enjoys changing the taste and the way something looks by adding heat and using different ratios of ingredients. Starting at age three she used to help her mom mix and measure ingredients; as she got older she started to assume more responsibility. Now, she no longer needs a step stool and is a mini-pro experimenting in the kitchen by herself.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Summer found herself with more free time to devote to her passions. She wanted her friends to share her love for baking. This led to a weekly Zoom baking tutorial where she taught others to bake delicious treats. Her motto was that no matter what your ability level is, there is always something yummy you can create. Pretty soon, she had people joining the Zoom tutorials from places she had never even heard of. According to her mom Huma, her tutorial was a hit!
Friends and family who saw her on Zoom were taken by her poise and baking knowledge. They suggested she apply for Kids Baking Championship, which has been Food Network’s highest-rated series in network history. On a whim, Summer decided to apply, and very quickly Food Network showed a great amount of interest in her. In fact, the audition process started almost immediately. Within a short amount of time, she was chosen from an applicant pool of almost 10,000 kids to be one of the 12 contestants on Kids Baking Championship, Season 10.
Cheer Summer and Ellora on as they compete on the show starting on Monday, December 27 at 8 p.m. on Food Network. They are sure to make Golden Elementary School, Travis Ranch School, and PYLUSD proud!
