Valencia High School BITA competes in construction contest to help build future of the industry

Valencia High School’s (VHS) Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA) recently participated in the 37th annual Design and Build Competition in Costa Mesa. The Tigers competed amongst 200 students from local high schools and colleges in a weekend-long competition to build a tiny structure of no more than 96 square feet.

Hosted by the Construction Industry Education Foundation, the competition allowed students to participate in hands-on learning alongside industry experts. Each team drafted and designed a unique structure and prepared the associated construction documents before actually constructing a tiny house, shed, or other structure at the build site within the time allotted. Each team’s structure, including Valencia’s, will now help house a homeless individual.

The Tigers applied their extensive training and practice to work together as a team in this competition. Workers from the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters then judged the competition based on completion of design, construction, code compliance, and the overall safety of the structure. Students even had the opportunity to earn scholarships for their hard work.

Valencia’s BITA program is led by teacher Roy Morrison and a part of the North Orange County Regional Occupational Program (NOCROP), a collaborative effort in career technical education by five school districts in Orange County. The program, under the direction of Superintendent Dr. Terri Giamarino, offers a wide variety of career technical education coursework and career readiness training to over 16,000 students in the county.

Great job, VHS BITA and NOCROP!
