In October, Valencia High School’s Education Pathway students enrolled in the capstone courses, Principles of Teaching and Learning and Teaching Students with Special Needs, began participating in work-based learning at Ruby Drive Elementary School, Kraemer Middle School, and Valencia High School SPED classrooms. Principles of Teaching and Learning and Teaching Students with Special Needs are Career Technical Education (CTE) courses offered through our partnership with North Orange County ROP. These courses allow students to apply what they have learned in the workplace. Students report to their work-based learning classrooms three days per week. In addition to gaining high school credit for taking this course, Principles of Teaching and Learning is articulated with Santiago Canyon Community College and is UC/CSU-approved as a college-preparatory elective.
Principles of Teaching Learning students enjoy working with Ruby Drive Elementary students and report back to their peers on their progress. Student workers participate in various activities such as facilitating small group lessons, working one-on-one to strengthen language acquisition skills, managing cooperative learning, assisting students needing additional support, and aiding teachers with other classroom duties. The high school students also gain valuable connections with the elementary students and report how much they enjoy watching their progress.
Teaching Students with Special Needs students work in secondary classrooms assisting the students in various classroom settings. Students at Kraemer Middle School assist newcomers with developing English language fluency and aid students with completing classroom assignments. While students working in SPED classrooms work one-on-one with students on reinforcing life skills and completing assigned tasks.
