In May, Valencia High and Kraemer Middle’s Cyber Security teams competed in the SoCal CyberCup Finals. SoCal Cyber Cup is the Southern California Cyber Competition with teams from all over the state competing for cash, prizes, and status! There are 3 levels—middle school, high school, and college—that compete in various competitions known as a Capture the Flag competition to qualify for finals.  Once in finals, they have the same type of challenging tasks only now they are under attack. There will be various red teams attacking them to try and undo their fixes or worse take out their computers completely.

Each level starts with 100 teams, only the top eight middle and high school teams and top seven college teams advance. Valencia’s high school and Kraemer’s middle school teams finished 2nd in their qualifying rounds to make it to finals.

In finals, Valencia High School finished 5th of all levels and 3rd in the high school division with student Lucas Breeden leading the Tigers scoring. The Cyber Tiger Team members are Lucas Breeden,  Nathan Nguyen, Brent Lee, Alyssa Wong, Jonathan Chao, Prisha Samtani, Melvin Yu, and Cody Nguyen.

According to their coach, teacher Dwight Osborn, the Tigers put in “…countless hours of preparation and training all while studying for their AP, IB, and Cambridge exams.”

In the finals, Kraemer Middle School finished 17th overall and 2nd in the middle school division with students Harold Zhang and Bruce Wu leading the scoring. The Cyber Kubs team members are Harold Zhang, Brice Wu, Gavin Du, Nathan Huynh, Jameson Xu, Ryan Chen, Daniel Yun, and Zarif Mustafiz.

Great job, VHS and KMS!
