Yorba Linda Middle School Unified Art Class Participates in Community-Based Instruction That Integrates Inclusion and Art

YLMS at Sprouts.

Yorba Linda Middle School students in Unified Art recently visited Sprouts in Yorba Linda to purchase pumpkins to decorate for fall.

Unified Art is an elective offering that includes students in special education and general education. The class model includes a mentorship between students to practice academic and social skills. Community-based instruction, known as CBI, is designed to target the development of functional skills in natural, non-school-based environments after classroom instruction takes place.

“Teachers Mrs. Makenna Smith and Mrs. Leanne Tangney, along with our incredible support staff, have done a wonderful job teaching this course. It allows for inclusivity among our students and fosters a positive learning experience for students,” stated Principal Paige Stills.

Mrs. Makenna Smith shared, “All students deserve a chance to make meaningful friends in and outside of the classroom.”

Way to go, Bobcats!
