Melrose Elementary Hosts AVID Family Science Night for 3rd Graders

On Thursday, January 18, 2024, approximately 50 Melrose Elementary 3rd-grade students and their families attended AVID Family Science night in the school’s gym! Over 100 people in total were in attendance.

“This special evening was planned by our 3rd-grade teachers, Mrs. Mora and Mrs. Nelson, to inform and engage families in AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) strategies,” shared Principal Janice Weber. 

AVID Strategies include Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR). The purpose of AVID is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society by embedding these best practices throughout the school day and across the curriculum.

Mrs. Mora presented information about AVID and current Valencia High School AVID students shared testimonials about how AVID has helped them in school with note taking and organization.

he second half of the evening, students and families engaged in Collaboration and Inquiry with magnets across several science stations such as A”maze”ing Magnets and A Day at the Races!
