Kraemer Middle School Student Earns Second at Orange County Science and Engineering Fair

Sarina Haque

Kraemer Middle School student Sarina Haque received a second place award for her project “Nutrient Overload” in the 69th Annual Orange County Science and Engineering Fair (OCSEF), held on March 10 at Chapman University.

Sarina’s project, which was submitted in the toxicology cateory, tested the effects of different pollutants on the regenerative rate of planaria (type of flatworm). Her project results showed that toxic levels of nutrient pollution in planaria may be further enriched between organisms through food chains, which in turn may threaten human health.

At OCSEF, each student presented a slideshow presentation, a three minute video, and a log book of pictures to the judges. This all culminated in a presentation of the project to four judges, followed by a question and answer session.

For her efforts, Sarina was also chosen to participate in the California Science and Engineering Fair, which will take place on April 16, 2024. This year, over 1,000 students participated in Orange County. Of those, 42 were selected to compete at the state level.

Congratulations, Sarina, and good luck at the state competition!
