On Tuesday, Feb. 16, Morse Elementary School launched a partnership with Team Kids, the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) and the Placentia Police Department to empower students to change the world with their actions.
Placentia is the 11th city to participate in the Team Kids Challenge, and Morse is the first school in Placentia to participate in the five-week program that culminates with a student-run carnival on March 22. The school’s fifth and sixth graders will create a leadership team that will meet weekly during lunch, and will plan the student-run carnival to benefit a charity chosen by the school’s students. The whole school participates in the weekly challenges and the carnival, and the whole school will witness the March 24 donation to their charity of choice.
From Feb. 22 through Feb. 26, Morse students will be challenged to bring in gently used towels, blankets and other pet items for the German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County. The second week’s challenge is for our students to help increase child literacy by bringing in gently used books for the Cathy Torrez Learning Center in Placentia. Finally, during the week of March 7 through March 11, students will be challenged to write letters thanking deployed U.S. troops for their service, with a goal of 500 letters.
Team Kids Inc. is an Irvine-based nonprofit focused on improving the lives of children by encouraging them to become compassionate leaders, entrepreneurs and philanthropists. The group inspires students through youth-led school- and community-based service projects that build teamwork skills and encourage the kids to make healthy choices for themselves and others in real-world situations. Team Kids is working to grow its 15-year-old California programs into a national model.
