Boeing’s research submarine, Echo Ranger, visits all four high schools

On the morning of Thursday, Feb. 25, representatives from Boeing visited all four comprehensive high schools with their Echo Ranger research submarine.

Several STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) classes got an up-close look at the unmanned underwater vehicle, as well as the chance to see an engaging presentation about the technology involved in submarine research from Boeing engineers. It gave students a better understanding of the engineering opportunities that are out there, as well as possible career paths.

This special assembly was catered to the district’s engineering, science and math-focused CareerLink Academy students, although all were welcome. Most of the attendees were wowed by both the technology behind the submarine, as well as the personable Boeing employees who work with it.

Echo Ranger was originally built in 2001 to capture high-resolution sonar images of sea beds for oil and natural gas companies. It is also used by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as a research vessel. The submersible weights more than five tons, is 18.5 feet long and is able to descend to 10,000 feet.
