At Woodsboro Elementary, Mrs. Bradley’s 6th-grade class is collaborating to design a dream bedroom. This unique project provides students with an opportunity to creatively solve mathematical problems using AVID’s WICOR strategies. Students demonstrated their inquiry skills by considering distinctive features to include in their designs, such as trapdoors, gaming system stations, obstacle courses, and even a volleyball net.
Following criteria set by Mrs. Bradley, students organized their projects to include a variety of geometric shapes representing the room’s features. Once the rooms were designed, groups calculated the area of each geometric shape within their bedroom. Upon completing their calculations, group members explained their reasoning and problem-solving strategies to their peers.
To further reinforce their understanding, students participated in a gallery walk where they shared their approaches and strategies for completing the task. Mrs. Bradley’s students’ enthusiasm for tackling creative mathematical challenges through WICOR strategies highlights the impact of effective educational experiences and the role of student engagement in preparing them for future academic and career success.
