Glenview Elementary School
Glenview celebrated Read Across America Day with guest readers visiting classrooms and speaking to students about the importance of reading. Art teacher Valerie Frank, lunch clerk Devon Pipen and Glenview parent and author Richard Barna read to classrooms, and shared the joy of great book.
Parents also joined students dressed in their pajamas on the field for a school-wide “Reading on the Green” event. Sixth grade buddies read with pals in the primary grades, and parents and children created a comfy reading picnic out on the grass in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Many thanks to the wonderful Glenview PTA who provided every student with a Dr. Seuss bookmark!
Lakeview Elementary School
Lakeview’s very first Preppy K class celebrated Read Across America Day by dressing up as Thing One and Thing Two! Preppy K teacher Mrs. Liu had a blast preparing for this day to continue her students’ love and excitement for reading. Everyone had a fun-filled day, and enjoyed seeing Principal Katherine Dailey dressed up as “The Cat in the Hat.”
Mabel Paine Elementary School
On Friday, March 4, students at Mabel Paine held their annual Read-A-Thon in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Students dressed in their pajamas, and brought their favorite books to read in their classrooms all morning. Principal Tamie Beeuwsaert even got in the spirit, and went around to the classrooms to read her new favorite book, “Mother Bruce.” There were blanket forts, fuzzy slippers and guest readers everywhere. Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!
Melrose Elementary School
The Melrose community came together to read in classrooms in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. In addition to having guest readers in all classrooms, students met with their cross-age buddies to read books and discuss literature.
Parkview School
In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, “The Cat in the Hat” made a special appearance in Parkview’s K-1 class. The students enjoyed a reading of “Green Eggs and Ham” by the Cat, along with cooking green eggs and ham burritos. The consensus was they were delicious! All learning activities in math, science and language arts centered on Dr. Seuss. The students enjoyed making Thing One and Thing Two books, Grinch door hangers and Cat in the Hat hats, along with learning word searches. A good time was had by all!
Rose Drive Elementary School
First and third grade classes “buddied up” for several readings from special guest readers. This was followed by small group readings, allowing students to read and share their favorite Dr. Seuss books. Each third grader was assigned a first grade partner to read to, an activity students from both grades seemed to truly love. What a magical and memorable way to celebrate this historical author’s birthday, as well as showcase our love for reading.
Travis Ranch School
Travis Ranch celebrated Salute to Literature Week with many activities, including a Community Read Day in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Guest readers included John and Ashley Force, the Chick-fil-A cow, Yorba Linda Mayor Pro-Tem Huang, Board members, district representatives, firefighters and police officers, Rotary members, and business owners. These community members read a book to a class, and shared more information about their careers. Additionally, a book drive was held collecting new and gently used books to be donated to Topaz and Ruby Drive elementary schools. We were astounded with the generosity of Travis families with a total of 3,310 books donated!
Tynes Elementary School
Tynes had a wonderful time celebrating Read Across America Day in honor of Dr. Seuss. Throughout the day, students in all grade levels welcomed guest readers into their classrooms. Parents, members of the Yorba Linda Woman’s Club and staff alike all enjoyed seeing all the smiles. Kindergarten had an extra special surprise by having stories read aloud in the multipurpose room by plant manager Andrew Monteverde, noon duty supervisor and retired custodian Hector Avalos, and childcare director Jason Abner, who is also a Tynes parent. Sixth graders buddied up with first graders, and read in the morning. The little buddies had such a great time listening to their older friends read their favorite stories. Many classrooms had additional activities, such as making bookmarks and bringing pillows and blankets to read on. Thanks to all parents, community members and staff for making March 2 such a fun reading celebration!
