On May 6, the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) Board of Education set aside time to recognize AVID 8th Grade Standouts from five middle schools. The students’ teachers, counselors, principals, and loved ones were also in attendance to show their support.
“Each year, the AVID Standout Award is given to students who demonstrate excellence, collaboration, integrity, and service in their academic achievements and individual determination. These five students are being recognized for their high GPA, community service, and involvement in leadership and extracurricular activities,” shared Dr. Will Gray, Executive Director of College & Career Readiness. “Many hours of dedication and hard work are behind these students’ accomplishments. This recognition represents the determination, perseverance, and commitment each student has demonstrated toward their education.”
Then, on May 13, all six AVID Standouts were honored by the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
Here is the list of this year’s PYLUSD AVID Standout Students:
- Kraemer Middle School – Maria Canizalez
- Travis Ranch Middle School – Alyssa Azar
- Tuffree Middle School – Kylie Dang
- Valadez Middle School Academy – Jennifer Garcia
- Yorba Linda Middle School – Greyson Smith
AVID, short for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a non-profit organization that supports students by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach. The program’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in our global society.
