On Friday, May 23, Valencia High School (VHS) held its 41st Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, paying tribute to the United States military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.
The solemn event brought together members of the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District Board of Education, local city councilmembers, district administrators, veterans, active-duty service members, community members, families, and students. The program featured heartfelt remarks from Principal Chris Herzfeld and student speakers Chandrika Bakshi, Nathan Cho, Rofiudin Asri, and Clarissa Hurtado. This year’s keynote address was delivered by United States Army Veteran Mr. Joseph L. Olivier.
“Today, we gather in our Memorial Garden to remember the brave men and women from our school and community who have selflessly devoted themselves to protecting our freedom,” shared student speaker Clarissa Hurtado. “We remember, especially, those who have paid the ultimate price. We come here today to express our gratitude and honor their sacrifice.”
Valencia’s Symphonic Band and Choral Program performed a moving lineup of patriotic music, including “Ocean Ridge Rhapsody,” “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Armed Forces – The Pride of America.” The ceremony was made even more memorable by a special helicopter flyover courtesy of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Maintaining a treasured tradition, Esperanza High School’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) respectfully presented and retired the colors to open and close the event.
“To all who have sacrificed for our freedom and our country, we remember your service today,” Bakshi concluded. “We honor you and continue to reflect upon the gifts you have given to us.”
