PYLUSD Welcomes Back Educators with Inspiring Kick-Off and Professional Development

On August 20 and 21, the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) officially welcomed back its elementary and secondary educators with a districtwide preservice featuring leadership presentations, student testimonials, and targeted professional development opportunities.

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Allan Mucerino, opened with a powerful message highlighting the transformative influence educators have in shaping the lives of students. Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, Dr. Olivia Yaung, followed by providing a comprehensive review of academic achievement data from the 2024–2025 school year.

Further guidance was provided by Executive Director of Elementary Education, Dr. Liz Leon, and Director of Secondary Education, Mr. Mike Young, who emphasized the district’s continued instructional priorities. Educators were encouraged to design purposeful lessons with differentiation in order to ensure equitable access to learning for all students. A particular focus was placed on integrated language support as English Learners remain a priority focus group. District leaders emphasized that all students benefit from structured engagement with academic vocabulary.

The preservice also featured student voices that underscored the impact of effective teaching. At the elementary preservice, current Kraemer Middle School student Harlan Tomasovic and alum Suzette Morales delivered heartfelt testimonies about the meaningful support they received in their educational journeys that led to their success. The following day at the secondary preservice, alumnae Marian Sayed and Regan Dierks shared similarly inspiring reflections, affirming the vital role educators play in recognizing potential and positively influencing students’ futures. Recordings of the student speakers are available on the district’s official YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/@placentiayorbalindausd.

Following the general session, teachers participated in targeted breakout sessions designed to advance their professional practice and support continuous growth, with an emphasis on writing and language acquisition strategies. All in all it was an impactful kick off to the school year, where educators across the district committed to supporting the success of Every Student, Every Day.
