On February 25, Valencia High School hosted Esperanza High School for a Unified Sports basketball game during the lunch period. Special education students and general education partners from both schools participated in a friendly and spirited intramural contest. A large and enthusiastic crowd of students, staff, and community members from both campuses and across the District gathered to cheer and demonstrate their support.
Unified Sports at Esperanza High School began several years ago as a student-led club dedicated to promoting inclusion and fostering friendships through shared athletic experiences and activities. Since its inception, Esperanza has hosted multiple Unified Sports events in which students with and without disabilities train and compete together. Valencia High School has since established its own program, further expanding inclusive athletic opportunities for students.
Unified Sports provides all participants with access to developmentally appropriate activities, including lifetime fitness, physical conditioning, and team sports. Through collaborative participation, students build competence, confidence, and teamwork skills while strengthening social connections. In addition, the program offers ongoing leadership opportunities that empower students to help cultivate a more inclusive and accepting school environment.
Way to go, Aztecs and Tigers Unified Sports!
