Morse Elementary School fourth graders enjoyed an activity-packed day culminating their social science study of the California Gold Rush, which included cross-curricular activities. On Monday, June 6, Pioneer Day came to life as students raced team-created covered wagons. Part of the race required that they stop at stations to pick up necessary supplies, including water, jerky and firewood, for the road to California. The day continued with participation in reader’s theater, as well as singing songs of the Old West. In the afternoon, they applied math skills to determine an amount of material, provisions or money supplied to an enterprise (originally called a prospector) in return for a share in the resulting profits (originally called a grubstake). The students ended the day by making corn husk dolls; not an easy task! All in all, Morse fourth graders got a glimpse into the difficult life the early settlers endured. It was a great day of learning!
