Morse Elementary’s AVID Family Night Inspires Students Through STEM and Aviation

On Thursday, March 20, Morse Elementary hosted an engaging and educational AVID Family Night that combined STEM with AVID, creating a memorable experience for students and their families. The evening began with a welcoming community dinner, where attendees gathered to share a meal and connect before the night’s activities commenced.

The event featured an inspiring AVID presentation in which students dressed as aviation pioneers, including Amelia Earhart, the Wright Brothers, Chuck Yeager, Chelsey Sullenberger, and Harriet Quimby. Taking the stage, they showcased the achievements of these trailblazers in flight, captivating the audience with their enthusiasm and knowledge.

To further emphasize the aviation theme, the evening included two special guest speakers: an aircraft mechanic and a pilot. Both professionals shared their experiences in the aviation industry, discussing the skills and education required for their careers. Their presentations provided insight into these dynamic professions and inspired students to consider future careers in STEM fields.

The night concluded with a hands-on STEM activity, during which families collaborated to design and build their own paper airplanes. The activity encouraged students to apply principles of engineering and aerodynamics as they constructed their planes. Once completed, participants engaged in a friendly flying competition, testing the distance and accuracy of their creations while cheering one another on in a spirited and supportive atmosphere.

AVID Family Night proved to be a resounding success, bringing STEM and AVID to life in a way that was both educational and enjoyable while also emphasizing the importance of family involvement in education.
