Morse Elementary Hosts Successful Family AVID & STEM Night

On Thursday, May 23, Morse Elementary School buzzed with excitement as students, parents, and teachers gathered for the highly anticipated Family AVID & STEM Night. The event aimed to integrate the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) mindset with a passion for learning and curiosity about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It featured a variety of interactive activities and presentations designed to engage young minds and emphasize the importance of education.

The evening commenced with a presentation on the AVID program, which Morse Elementary has effectively incorporated into its curriculum. AVID is a college readiness system that prepares students for higher education by focusing on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (WICOR) strategies. Fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade students performed a skit about soccer players, illustrating the importance of perseverance and the principle of “Never Giving Up.” Following this, students from each grade level, beginning with TK/Kindergarten, presented their grade-specific AVID cheers on stage.

The highlight of the night was the “Aluminum Foil Boats” challenge. Students, along with their families, eagerly designed and constructed small boats using only aluminum foil. They then tested their creations by determining how many pennies each boat could hold before sinking. This hands-on activity introduced students to principles of buoyancy, density, and engineering design in an engaging and practical manner, fostering curiosity and enhancing problem-solving skills.

Principal Kelly Farrell expressed gratitude for the community’s support and emphasized the significance of such events in cultivating a culture of learning. “Events like AVID and STEM Night are crucial for inspiring our students and showing them the endless possibilities that education can offer. We are committed to providing our students with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed.”

The Family AVID & STEM Night at Morse Elementary School was a resounding success, leaving students excited about their educational journey and eager to explore the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. With ongoing community support and dedicated educators, the future looks exceptionally bright for these young learners.
