On Thursday, May 23, Valencia High School (VHS) commemorated its 40th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, honoring United States military personnel who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation.

The ceremony was attended by Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District Board members, administrators, community members, local veterans, active military personnel, families, and students. Speakers included Principal Chris Herzfeld and students Madi Low, Archer Lee, Chandrika Bakshi, and Clarissa Hurtado. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Paul Berman, a retired VHS teacher and former Staff Sergeant with the United States Special Operations Command.

“Today, we gather in our Memorial Garden to remember the brave men and women from our school and community who have selflessly devoted themselves to protecting our freedom,” Student Madi Low shared. “We remember, especially, those who have paid the ultimate price while protecting our freedom with their lives. We come here today to demonstrate our gratitude for their service and respect for the sacrifices they have made.”

Valencia’s Symphonic Band and Choral Program performed several patriotic pieces, including the National Anthem, Espirit De Corps, Armed Forces the Pride of America, Taps, and Where Eagles Soar. The performances were highlighted by a helicopter flyover from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Continuing a long-standing tradition, Esperanza High School’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) students presented and retired the colors at the beginning and conclusion of the ceremony.

“To all who have sacrificed for our freedom and our country, we remember your service today,” Low concluded. “We honor you and continue to reflect upon the gifts you have given to us.”
