Honors students at Bernardo Yorba use science to solve a forensic mystery

Inquiry, inference, investigation and the scientific method came to life for eighth grade honors science students at Bernardo Yorba Middle School. Students were able to develop their scientific reasoning skills using University of California, Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science forensic mystery, “The Case of the Missing Millionaire.” Working in lab groups, students examined a crime scene, and ran forensic tests on crime scene evidence, which included fingerprint, blood type, handwriting, pH, fiber and scent analyses. This open-ended mystery challenged students to solve the puzzle of, “How Felix came to this end, if indeed he did.”
