The New Year has brought science center stage at Morse Elementary School. Fourth grade is transitioning to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Using the current standard of electricity and magnetism, students explored the over-arching question of what types of items attract magnetic fields. Performance expectations of the NGSS, require students to demonstrate proficiency in asking questions, analyzing and interpreting data, constructing explanations and designing solutions, engaging in argument from evidence, and obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information. The Morse PTA sponsored a Family Science Night in January. Various California State University, Fullerton, science departments shared student-created projects, such as a Titan Rover, Arduino widgets that control the rover, a 3D sandbox demonstrating rainfall, water storage and ground movement and a volcanic eruption. Cerritos College provided an instant ice cream demonstration and “Mathematics Magic.” Members of the Valencia High School TiGears robotics club shared last year’s robot. Needless to say, Morse students are moving forward with the NGSS with great enthusiasm!
