Third grade students from Golden Elementary School hiked on the fallen leaves of live oak trees on the campus of Mt. San Antonio College, just like the Gabrielino Indians did hundreds of years ago. They traveled back in time to discover the lifestyle of local Native Americans, extending their learning in social studies. They twined plant material to make string, created music using authentic instruments, made shell money with a pump drill, and learned how the Tongva and Acjachemen used plants as food, shelter and medicine. This “beyond the books” experience, led by teachers Lisa Fraser, Stephanie Dey, Robin Dudnick and Scott Villanueva, taught empathy and stewardship beyond what they can learn within the four walls of a classroom.
