On June 1, in a joint adventure between Bernardo Yorba Middle School (BYMS) and Esperanza High School (EHS), three generations of AVID students were treated to a campus tour and a special guest speaker at University of California, Irvine. A highlight of the trip was learning the story about the school’s Anteater mascot, “Zot.” In addition to touring the beautiful campus, students learned about programs, admissions requirements, and college life. The students also LOVED eating at the dining commons and shopping in the bookstore.
At the conclusion of the tour and lunch, students had the opportunity to hear from one of BYMS teacher, Mrs. Swarm’s, former students who is set to graduate from UCI this year. The former students will graduate with a double major in criminology and forensic science and will be heading to work for the FBI next month. She answered questions for the students and encouraged them that they “could do ANYTHING.” Her best advice was to remember that your GPA isn’t representative of how smart you are, but how hard you work! Chaperones Mrs. Swarm, Mrs. Cyrus, and Ms. Garcia agreed with the student!
