Interns serve Valadez Middle School community

As May approaches, academic communities are preparing for many transitions. Promotions, graduations, registration for the upcoming year, and many much anticipated summertime activities. Still, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected many in numerous ways. Local students and families continue to be filled with a multitude of experiences and memories, and the Valadez administration, teachers, and staff will continue to remind students that they are not alone as challenges present.

The Valadez mental health team has been fortunate to have three remarkable interns (Mr. James Castillo and Ms. Marzi Lawson from the U.S.C. School of Social Work, and Ms. Lizeth Moreira from the C.S.U. Northridge School of Psychology) placed with them since the beginning of the year. Together they have unconditionally supported the Valadez mental health support services team. Each intern has participated in numerous home visits to facilitate engagement in distance learning, facilitated access to basic needs, participated in crisis response and assessment, provided caregiver referrals to various community resources, provided individual and family mental health support services, and provided consultation with teachers regarding student needs in both hybrid and remote only learning.

“Together we have practiced the art mobile mental health and telehealth support services for our students, Principal Cuco Gracian shared. “As many families entrust us with keeping their children safe as they return to in person learning, we remain excitedly equipped to creatively meet the mental health needs of our students.”

The fourth quarter also marks the end of internship and graduate school for the Valadez interns. They have become an integral part of the school community. Each has given the students of Valadez their very best support and been forever professionally inspired by their time with us at Valadez.
