Bringing to life the themes from their recent reading of “Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night” by Cynthia Rylant, Rose Drive Elementary School second grade students were treated to their very own campout on Friday afternoon, Nov. 6.
Thanks to Mrs. Woodward’s and Mrs. Abadie’s creativity, the multipurpose room was transformed into a campsite, complete with twinkling stars, night lights and a campfire. Spread out on a bed of warm and comfy blankets and pillows with stars twinkling in the night sky, second graders made their own s’mores, played games, sang songs, told stories and listened to readings of other books from the Henry and Mudge series, many of which were presented by several fifth grade students, who enthusiastically joined the fun and read by flashlight.
What a fun afternoon — the perfect activity to not only reinforce the vocabulary from the story, but to also allow students to experience for themselves the thrill of the adventure enjoyed by the story’s characters. These are the kind of memories second graders simply love making!
