On Wednesday, January 26, forty-five Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) students and their families were treated to a special evening complete with dinner and mariachi players at the Fullerton Elks Lodge. Students in attendance were all winners of the scholarship competition hosted annually by the Coast to Coast Foundation of Fullerton. The Coast to Coast Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization run by volunteers and entirely funded by donations. They are committed to making a difference in the lives of local families.
Students in the PYLUSD McKinney Vento program, a program that assists students due to their housing situation, were asked to write a letter as to how and why they could use a $500 scholarship from Coast to Coast and the financial benefactor, Ryan D. The purpose of the scholarships are to assist students financially in order to help them be successful in school. Scholarships also included several laptops and money for a refrigerator for one lucky family.
Entertainment was provided by PYLUSD’s very own student mariachi band called Los Mariachis Morales, which includes Diego, Ashley, and Miguel Morales of Valadez Middle School Academy and Valencia High School.
Jon Matson, PYLUSD’s McKinney Vento Homeless Liaison, shared the following about the evening: “We are honored to continue our partnership with Marie Avena from Coast to Coast of Fullerton. They have been so generous to our most vulnerable students. Having a generous donation from Ryan, the evening’s benefactor, made the event possible, and we are so grateful to both Ryan and Marie. All of those in attendance were thrilled about their scholarships.”
The next round of generous scholarships will be distributed at a similar event in May.
