The Unified Sports programs at Esperanza High School and Valencia High School recently came together to play a basketball exhibition game in the Esperanza gym. Both schools had a great turnout of athletes and fans to make this event super special for our students and community. “Hopefully this is the first of many!” Activities Director Meghann Lukach shared.
This inclusive competition brings together Special Olympic athletes and general education partners to train and compete together on basketball and other sports teams.
A few years ago, Unified Sports started at Esperanza as a club led by students focused on inclusion and building friendships through sports and activities. In the past, EHS has hosted several Unified Sports events where students with disabilities and general education partners joined together. Now, the Aztecs have expanded their program by offering courses of Unified Physical Education! Similar to the club, this PE class is a fully inclusive program that combines students in a non-competitive learning environment.
Way to go, EHS and VHS!
Wonderful to see inclusion in with sports! Well done to all involved!
