Yorba Linda High School Art Department and Sierra Vista First Graders Collaborate for a Creative and Fun Experience

In a heartwarming display of creativity and community, the Yorba Linda High School (YLHS) art department recently hosted an unforgettable event for Sierra Vista’s first graders. This collaborative project brought together young artists and high school ceramics students in a delightful fusion of imagination and craftsmanship.

The event began with Sierra Vista’s first-grade class drawing imaginative monsters. These unique creations were then skillfully brought to life by the talented YLHS ceramics students, who transformed the drawings into clay figures. This collaborative effort showcased not only the artistic talents of both groups but also the strong sense of community and mentorship between the high school and elementary school students.

A highlight of the project was when the first graders visited YLHS to glaze their monsters with the help of their high school Mustang buddies. This hands-on experience allowed the younger students to engage directly in the artistic process, guided and encouraged by their older peers. The interaction was filled with joy and enthusiasm, as noted by observers who saw firsthand the excitement and bonding between the students.

The Sierra Vista first grade teachers, Mrs. Stefan, Mrs. Gifford and Mrs. Hendry proposed the collaboration to Mr. Hendry at YLHS. Mr. Schumerth from the YLHS Art department was also part of the collaboration. Mr. Hendry, expressed his gratitude: “Thanks to everyone for supporting the arts and making this possible. It was a lot of fun for both groups of kids.”

Visitors to the art show were equally impressed. Comments like “woah, so cool!” and “look at that, it’s awesome!” echoed through the halls, highlighting the success of the event. The high school students, too, were thrilled to participate and share the experience with the younger kids, creating a vibrant and happy atmosphere.

Reflecting on the event, one observer noted, “It was incredible how close to the drawings the ceramic replicas were! There was so much happiness and bonding going on in the rooms!”

The success of this project has inspired calls for it to become an annual tradition. “Great job Brent, Jeff, and Calle!! This should be an annual event!!” one supporter exclaimed.

The collaborative art project not only provided a fun and educational experience for both groups of students but also strengthened the bonds within the community. It’s clear that the event brought immense joy to everyone involved, making it a standout example of the power of art and collaboration in education.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a reality, and special thanks to Mr. Hendry for providing this wonderful opportunity! Your efforts have undoubtedly left a lasting impression on both the young artists and their high school mentors.
