The Bernardo Board Game Club, started last school year, is open to all seventh and eighth grade students at Bernardo Yorba Middle School. Interest has grown considerably, and over 40 students have participated in one or more meetings so far this school year. Games played include Settlers of Catan, King of Tokyo, Dixit, Ticket to Ride, Splendor and Pit.
The district’s math standards call for students to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, as well as to reason abstractly and quantitatively. Modern board games encourage students to detect patterns, plan ahead, predict the outcome of alternative moves and learn from experience. They also learn social skills, such as communicating verbally, sharing, taking turns and enjoying interaction with others. Most of all, however, students are benefitting from the opportunity to interact socially with other students, all while being “unplugged.” They are intellectually challenged in a fun and enjoyable environment.
