Three PYLUSD Middle Schools Recognized as 2025 California Schools to Watch

On March 6, the California League of Schools recognized the Orange County School of Computer Science (OCSCS), Tuffree Middle School, and Yorba Linda Middle School (YLMS) as 2025 California Schools to Watch. This designation honors schools that demonstrate exceptional collaboration, innovation, and sustained academic excellence.

This recognition marks the first re-designation for OCSCS and Tuffree Middle School and the third for Yorba Linda Middle School, reflecting their commitment to continuous improvement.

At OCSCS, Interim Principal Dr. William Gray attributed the achievement to the school’s mastery-based learning model, which fosters student development as creators, collaborators, and innovators. The institution’s Innovation Lab provides hands-on experience in fields such as computer science, engineering, entrepreneurship, and video production. Additionally, OCSCS integrates C-STEM education through UC Davis, blending robotics and computer science into core subjects. Nearly half of the faculty hold specialized credentials, and several educators have received distinguished awards, further contributing to the school’s academic success.

Tuffree Middle School Principal Sarah Barton highlighted the school’s dedication to adapting to the evolving needs of its students. Recent academic gains include a 9.1% increase in math proficiency and a 7.7% increase in English Language Arts proficiency. The school prioritizes holistic student development, with a significant percentage of students participating in extracurricular activities, athletics, and music programs, reinforcing its mission to prepare students for future academic and career pursuits.

Yorba Linda Middle School Principal Paige Stills emphasized the role of a multi-tiered system of support in fostering student success. The school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework cultivates a positive learning environment, while the B3 intervention program offers targeted academic assistance. Additionally, the schoolwide instructional focus and Professional Learning Community (PLC) process promote collaborative teaching practices to enhance student achievement.

The recognition of these institutions as California Schools to Watch underscores their dedication to excellence in education and student success.
