On May 6, high school students from the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District participated in a unique civic learning experience at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. The event featured Neil Gorsuch, who visited the museum to discuss the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence and the release of Heroes of 1776: The Story of the Declaration of Independence, which he co-authored with Janie Nitze.
As part of PYLUSD’s valued partnership with the museum, a select group of students was invited to participate in a private question-and-answer session with Justice Gorsuch and Mrs. Nitze prior to the public program. Students enrolled in the Honors Civics program at Yorba Linda High School were joined by site-selected students from Valencia High School and El Dorado High School for an engaging discussion focused on American history, civic responsibility, the role of the judiciary, and the enduring significance of the Declaration of Independence.
The conversation provided students with a rare opportunity to interact directly with a sitting United States Supreme Court Justice, ask thoughtful questions, and gain firsthand insight into the principles and institutions that shape American democracy. Experiences such as these help bring classroom learning to life while fostering critical thinking, civic engagement, and a deeper appreciation for the nation’s founding ideals.
To commemorate the occasion, each student and staff member received a personally signed copy of Heroes of 1776: The Story of the Declaration of Independence. Participants also had the opportunity to take photographs with Justice Gorsuch and Mrs. Nitze, creating lasting memories of an extraordinary educational experience.
This special event reflects PYLUSD’s ongoing commitment to providing students with meaningful opportunities to connect with influential leaders, explore history beyond the classroom, and develop the knowledge and skills necessary to become informed and engaged citizens.
