Esperanza’s Medical Sciences Academy tours Cypress College

On Tuesday, March 1, Esperanza High School’s Medical Sciences Academy (MSA) took a tour of the Cypress College campus. The tour included detailed information about the school’s medical programs, such as nursing, radiology, dentistry and mortuary science.

Not only did Cypress showcase their facilities, they also gave EHS students some perspective. Nathan Wilch commented, “[The tour] showed the medical aspects from a working perspective. I found out some benefits and drawbacks of each field.”

The dentistry facility featured a mock exam room for students to practice their skills on real patients who come in to have their teeth cleaned. The mortuary science building provided students with the opportunity to see where and how bodies are embalmed, without any deceased bodies actually in the room. Students also toured the makeup and facial reconstruction room where they learned about restructuring and applying makeup to the deceased in order to make them presentable at viewings.

Aside from the 30 Esperanza students, 15 Travis Ranch School and prospective MSA students joined in on the field trip. They were accompanied by EHS Assistant Principal Gina Aguilar and social science teacher Brent Willis, as well as Travis Ranch science teacher Mary Chapluk and COSA Kim Houg.

It was an informative, engaging and inspiring experience. As Kayla Winkler put it, “The trip to Cypress showed me things about the school. I actually want to apply there, and I had never thought about that before visiting.”
