Two district educators honored with “Celebrating English Learner Successes” award

Each year, Orange County school districts have the opportunity to nominate two people to receive the “Celebrating English Learner Successes” award in recognition of the hard work and dedication on behalf of English learners. PYLUSD is pleased to honor Alma Padilla and Sylvia Cuesta as this year’s recipients of this honor.

Alma Padilla started in the district as a bilingual teacher at Rio Vista and Ruby Drive elementary schools. She currently serves as an early learning specialist, overseeing Title I preschool, Community-Based English Tutoring (CBET) and school readiness, as well as providing curriculum support for Preppy K. Most recently, Alma successfully secured a grant to implement a California State Preschool Program at Rio Vista, Ruby Drive, Melrose and Topaz elementary schools. Her vision, hard work and deep understanding of the educational needs of English learners have benefited countless students throughout her career with PYLUSD.

Sylvia Cuesta teaches in the new State Preschool Program at Rio Vista. She has also been part of school readiness, CBET and Even Start for PYLUSD. She consistently demonstrates tireless commitment to our youngest English learners and their families by providing outstanding preschool opportunities that help equip them with the skills they need to be successful in kindergarten and beyond. Her genuine warmth and caring resonate as she interacts with students, parents and staff members throughout the day.

Alma Padilla and Sylvia Cuesta drew from their many talents, experiences and knowledge of early childhood education to design and implement a model State Preschool Program at Rio Vista Elementary School. Visitors to the program continue to be impressed with the positive and enriching learning environment they have created for three and four year olds. The Rio Vista program will serve as a model for new State Preschool programs at Melrose, Ruby Drive and Topaz elementary schools.

Alma and Sylvia will be honored at a recognition dinner with family members and colleagues to celebrate their accomplishments.

Congratulations!
