On the 16th anniversary of September 11, 2001, the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) remembered the thousands of Americans who lost their lives, as well as the selfless bravery of first responders. On Monday, September 11, PYLUSD facilities flew flags at half-staff, and many schools held special ceremonies or moments of silence in remembrance. Fairmont Elementary School
The Fairmont Falcons held a morning Patriot Day assembly in remembrance of the anniversary of 9/11. Principal Cindy Rex began the ceremony by reflecting on the tragic events that happened that day 16 years ago. Girl Scout Troop 3286 then presented the colors by displaying the American and California state flag for the crowd to see. The morning also consisted of patriotic music courtesy of Fairmont and Bernardo Yorba Middle School, a poem of “remembers” by students, and a speech by assistant principal, Teresa Mulcayh. The assembly ended with an opportunity to honor local first responders and military families in attendance.
George Key School/Venture Academy
George Key and Venture Academy students and staff also participated in a special Patriot’s Day ceremony. During the service, students helped lower the school’s American flag to half-staff, lead participants in the pledge of allegiance, and recited the history of Patriot Day. The students also made thank you cards and presented them to honored guests, Officers Rodriguez and Martinez of the Placentia Police Department.
Glenknoll also held a special assembly in honor of Patriot Day. Boy Scout Troop 851, joined by Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Brownies, and Daisies, began the assembly by presenting the flag and leading the school in the Pledge of Allegiance. Local deputy sheriffs attended and a few first graders shared why they are thankful for them. Everyone took advantage of the opportunity to thank everyday heroes while, at the same time, remembering the heroes and events of September 11, 2001 through a moment of silence.
Glenview Elementary School
Glenview Elementary scholars recognized Patriot Day with a school-wide flag salute and a patriotic song tribute in honor of September 11. Boy and Girl Scouts were also invited to wear their scout uniforms to school in honor of the special day.
