Mrs. Olson and Mrs. Riggio’s third grade class at Lakeview Elementary School started learning about geometry in math by studying lines, angles and various types of triangles. In order to deepen their understanding that geometry is all around us, Mrs. Riggio led a discussion about geometric shapes seen in architecture; specifically looking at geodesic domes. Students observed a flip chart that illustrated various geodesic domes and their different functions. Then, students participated in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activity that called for them to create their own geodesic dome using jelly beans and toothpicks. The students had a great time, and were able to recognize the equilateral triangles that helped to form the dome and give it strength.
